Been sitting on this idea for months. Somehow wanted to line/cover the bottom of a canvas bag so it is more rugged/waterproof. Wanted to use some kind of truckbed/rhinoliner/herculiner or similar. Truth is it works for impact resistance on flat surfaces but cracks when flexed. See my test material below. Not suitable for this application. [so you're posting about stuff you haven't done now?? -ed.] At the last minute I held off... Not even going the waxed cotton route. Keeping as is. Close one...

Try This
Coat area you want with Wallpaper sizing.
Mix 2 parts black latex paint( either flat or semi gloss) with 1 part boiled linseed oil.
Add Japan dryer to help dry.
Paint on area that was coated with the sizing.
can do a couple coats and will take a few days to dry.
Recipe from the 1800's and works perfect.
@tom just found this book "the amercia frugal housewife" that is jammed w/ all kind of crazy recipes/tips that require limestone/saltpeter/linseed etc.
I spy Highlife in foreground of top pic.
I'd do a simple Scotch Guard spray.
