Great video presented by Rohan Anderson, the writer behind the Grow|Gather|Hunt|Cook blog Whole Larder Love. "Meal is.....wild stinging nettle pasta" - an example of simple foraging that Rohan talks about in his new book. Not only is the video slick as a greased pig, but hopefully it gets readers fired up to meet the guy when he comes to the States next year - details to follow but any friends of the Somerville public library should watch this space...  Sidenote if you think your town/bookstore/library could sustain an author reading  give him a call; hell he might swing by. 10E2072: SPL | Design Talk #2 | Christine Mitchell

A few weeks ago local illustrator and 10engines friend Christine Mitchell (N'East Style) gave a talk at the Somerville (MA) Public Library about her work, career path and the usefulness [necessity? -ed.] of social media. This is the second design talk organized by the Friends of the Somerville Public Library (for whom I volunteer), the first talk featured Aaron Draplin a few months ago. Sidenote, The Friends have a big book sale fundraiser happening this weekend - further reading.

The gents from Rough Water Films put together a glimpse at the short lecture and ensuing afternoon tea-social; featuring Kick*ss Cupcakes, deer-sausage rolls [yes! -ed] and pumpkin pie ice cream. Not messing around... Must add huge thanks to my sis for being KP.

10E2071: That Switchback Look

Really just an excuse to alert you that after 10 years in the business, Burlington (VT) brewer Switchback will finally bottle their beer (rather than only sell on draught locally or kegs).  Bottles will be available at "gas stations, grocery stores and beverage stores". Lot of happy people. Looking forward to winter and beergloves on the deck I guess...

The zipline thing is a Riglet Reel, from Burton. It adheres (with NASA grade adhesive...) to the front of your child's board so you can pull them around the base area, or across a flat, then retracts back to the base. Great way to mess around with your young'uns.

Being released via record label City Slang, Lambchop asked their producer Mark Nevers to re-envision their 2012 album Mr. M. The resulting EP titled Mr. N is 22 minutes. Will be download only I believe, further reading. You can preview it on Amazon.

10E2069: A Day in Vermont at Powderjet

A little rainy day reminder from PowderJet (wooden backcountry snowboards, owner Jesse Loomis)  in Vermont to take her easy and potter around the woodshop. Looks like that boat is crashed into the house in the opening shot, love it. Video by Shem Roose.

No toxic soup... from the site "I build PowderJets in the cleanest way I can. I use US grown FSC certified maple and poplar, which I laminate together with a super clean bio resin from Entropy Resin. The whole thing is cooked in an industrial press that I designed here in my work shop. The boards are then hand sanded, then finished with a Vermont made, whey based polyurethane developed at UVM. It's got a rocker profile for speed and float, deep sidecut with a tight radius for quick turns, and a set back stance location for stability and nose float. We only make about 150 boards a year, and it's all done here in Vermont, by people who take powder days off." via PowderJet Snowboards.

10E2068: 6th Top Shelf Flea this Sunday - Davis Sq.

Top Shelf Flea Market is a semi-annual gathering of shops and independent vendors selling all the things you didn't know you couldn't live without. Mens and ladies vintage clothing, housewares, books, music and everything else. We have it all.

My neighbor Guisepp has been corralling vintage vendors for 3 years, so this makes the 6th incarnation of The Top Shelf Flea. The roster includes; An Affordable Wardrobe, Artifaktori, Eddigan's (furniture), Glamourpuss Creations, Gypsy, Newton Street Vintage, Studebaker Hawk (records), The Red Velvet Shoe.

10E2067: Giveaway - New West Knifeworks

For over 10 years, New West KnifeWorks and owner Corey Milligan have created these distinctive knives. I have to be honest I have seen them in magazines previously but just sort of whipped by them... need to get out more maybe. My loss. Need to get some color in my life. These Fusionwood handles are created from hardwood logged in Vermont.

The blades are made of US Steel and cut ground and finished by the Lamson and Goodnow Company, America's oldest cutlery manufacturer, in nearby Shelburne Falls, MA. That 1800s  factory is now run completely on hydro power generated on site,  making this a very "green" knife.

The example above is a Mini Chopper; 3.4" blade with an 8" overall length, aka the cheese cleaver. 10E2066: Owly Shadow Puppets

Andrea Everman makes these shadow puppets from lasercut matboard. We just bought a few and they are pretty damn sturdy. The Owl is great, flapping his wing as you pull the attached. See more at owlyshadowpuppets.etsy.com.

"The puppets are all designed with moving parts, so the mermaid "swims", the T-rex "roars" and the Toothfairy "can fly". I now use a pop-fastener for the puppet joints which is made from recycled plastic-- this fastener is safer for children because it cannot come undone once the puppet is assembled.  

Also, I have found that the multi-jointed puppets (Mermaid, seamonster, T-rex, and diplo) are the most satisfying for young performers. These designs are the most intuitive to operate with a stick in each hand."  -Andrea

This Saturday and Sunday is the American Field pop-up market here in Boston (basically next to SOWA), on the same lines as the well known Pop-Up Flea and NorthernGrade. Not only a chance to see many of these products in the wild but a good chance to meet-the-makers and socialize. This has been organized by Ball and Buck with a big crop of vendors, music, food trucks, etc. Here's wishing everyone a productive day.  10am-5pm both days. 540 Harrison Ave., Boston, MA. Free to the public.

This is the weather for soft boiled eggs; shorter days so chickens laying less, and cool mornings promote standing around the stove for a few minutes watching the water boil...

10E2057: Top Man Does Harris Tweed Again

For the second year Top Man (UK) have created jackets of Harris Tweed (£150). This time there are waistcoats and a rucksack as well. Full line. Some inventive pocket placement choices, and mostly brown colors used. Making HT available (and not forgotten) must be one key to its survival. 

The Made In England line has a bit more color. Smarten up the high street! Michael Munro-Dunn should approve. Have to admit have never bought anything from TopMan myself.

10E2056: Sponsored Review | LLBean Signature "Double-Knee Carpenter Pants"

Marc Desrosiers, L.L.Bean Signature Men’s Designer was good enough to shoot over a bit of backstory here; “For decades the guys at Bath Iron Works have depended on us for the rugged dependable clothes they need while building our nation’s navy. Our Signature carpenter pant is definitely inspired by them. Double knee panels and rivets at every stress point imaginable, and washed like crazy so they’re super comfortable right out the gate. Welder or weekend warrior, these pants are no joke.”

If you read 10e you'll know I have a bit of a thing for work pants like this... LLBean gifted these to review - here are my thoughts. Stylistically the work pants echo various double-kneed pants of turn-to-mid 20th century with the pockets flowing into the panels, and the wash process gives them an almost tin cloth appearance, though they are dry cotton. Straight fit through the waist and true to size. Double-Knee Carpenter Pant, Destroyed, $99.

Usually I don't care for pre-washes and yes, would love to see an unwashed version of these too but the only fault I can really find is that they are $100 and imported. This is completely inline with the rest of LLBean Signature but have to think that those spending $100 here might be tempted to spend a bit more and get heritage DNA actual Filson tin cloth pants. Or perhaps price them lower and go against Carhartt's attempt at a woodsy recreation of their double-knees which are $70 (and imported)? Those arguments are over my pay-grade but important to many consumers... I can tell you that they fit and feel great (32x32 on 5'10" - that is long enough to cuff) and imho look pretty damn good. Intern! - Run the slideshow!

They must have had fun raking around for new imagery to use, " label at back was designed using L.L.Bean's 70's logo and inspired by a plaque that once hung in our flagship store."
