Out of 460 challenges as reported to the American Library Association's Office for Intellectual Freedom, below are the top 10 titles by frequency of challenge -that is people advocating their removal from public library stacks. Not going to get out the soapbox, just don't ban books.

Born in 1945 in Kenfig Hill, a small Welsh coal-mining village near Bridgend, Howard Marks attended Oxford University where he earned a degree in nuclear physics and post graduate qualifications in philosophy.

Described by the Daily Mail (UK Tabloid) as 'the most sophisticated drugs baron of all time', Howard Marks has worked with the British Secret Service and has been connected with the Mafia, the IRA, MI6 and the CIA.

Busted in 1988 by the American Drug Enforcement Agency and sentenced to twenty-five years at America's toughest federal penitentiary; Terre Haute, Indiana. He was released on parole in 1995 after serving seven years.

In 1996 he released his autobiography, Mr. Nice.

Bit of a folk hero in Britain for the blackbeltorigami+greenthumb set, this dramatization of the bio Mr. Nice puts on the rosy glasses no doubt. Not condoning or commenting on the real history. Good role for Rhys Ifans.

Just found these USDA handbooks. To say wealth of information is the understatement of the year. Sure many were writtten in the 50's but retrotastic. Over 700 titles including;

Cheese varieties and descriptions.
Small sawmills: a pocket guide. [see what they did there?? -ed.]
Egg grading manual.
Canning in glass jars in community canning centers.
First aid for flooded homes and farms.
Snow-survey safety guide.

My favourite so far is The Northeastern Loggers Handbook. Tons of illustrations and older photos. Clear the calendar...

Full on reblog. No shame. True Grit as conceived by the Coen brothers. Christmas release. Apparently this will adhere close to the original text (i.e. movie follows the girl's point of view) so maybe read the fantastic book first.

peru fair -recap

Saturday saw the 29th Peru Fair go down. 2 highlights for us were that 1) the fire department was back doing the pig roast (allnighter) and 2) we convinced a family friend to drive his WWII-styled jeep in the parade with us. The fair is one of the touchstones of my calendar (that and the USOpen Snowboard champs) basically because it marks one time of year to meet all your buds and catch up. Ok, let's recap...

Friday 10pm. See how the ground is all dark under the pigs... that is fat.
Everytime you turn them (30mins) it would drip down (practically self basting)
and the smell was fantastic.
The handles get hot. Gloves are key.


Corn being wetted down for the grill tomorrow.
Saturday now, 1am. Ear to ear. Like a pig in... etc.
5am... Up w/ the kids ready to feed the horses.
