10E2160: Johnny Cupcakes at Somerville Library - May 10

Paging teens, 20somethings and those young at heart. As the fifth in a series of design talks at the Somerville (MA) Public Library, I am psyched to announce the next speaker - streetwear impresario Johnny Earle aka Johnny Cupcakes. On May 10th he will be telling his career story; focusing on the importance of branding, starting the business (both web based and retail) with little-to-no start up money, entrepreneurship, small business management, product development, marketing and communication, and graphic design. Pop-up shop and social hour to follow.

Huge thanks to the Johnny Cupcakes team for making this happen - he is a busy guy and any young business person (even beyond the apparel realm) would be well served by attending this event. 4pm. After-school special!

Please note: This event is free but seating is strictly limited to 60 attendees - secure your spot by picking up a ticket in advance from the circulation desk at the Somerville (Central) Library, 79 Highland Ave. Bus 88 or 90 from Davis Square or walk over after your brunch at Highland Kitchen... or up from Union Square for the Indo' fans. And these ain't no ordinary tickets... We were very lucky to work with Eli Epstein of Union Press who created these fantastic letterpressed, numbered cards as a ticket and takeaway.

10E2103: Lookback - Kodachrome Lecture at SPL

A few weeks ago local art lecturers Steve and Amber Tourlentes came in to the Somerville library for the 4th in an ongoing series of general design talks. They spoke about "Kodachrome"; giving a brief lesson on the history and importance of Kodak's Kodachrome film. Was one of the best attended discussions so far. Once again Rough Water Films created a sizzler video of the talk, as above. 

In a few weeks (Feb 9) the library will be screening In The Blood - the river driving/logging doc by Sumner McKane. Social hour after will be in the theme of a camp dinner/bean supper. Hope to see you there.

10E2100: Lookback - Cuppow Spoke at SPL

A few weeks back local creators Josh Resnikoff and Aaron Panone from Cuppow came to the Somerville Public Library and gave an illustrative talk on product creation, business ethics and managing their collaborative relations. Package printer Mike Dacey of Repeat Press/Fringe was also on the panel w/ their illustrator Natalya Zahn in attendance. Following their advice we are releasing this lookback on a Tuesday...

This was the third in a series of Design Talks created by The Friends of the Somerville Public Library, (full disclosure, I helped arrange these starting with Aaron Draplin then Christine 'N'East Style' Mitchell). 10E2072: SPL | Design Talk #2 | Christine Mitchell

A few weeks ago local illustrator and 10engines friend Christine Mitchell (N'East Style) gave a talk at the Somerville (MA) Public Library about her work, career path and the usefulness [necessity? -ed.] of social media. This is the second design talk organized by the Friends of the Somerville Public Library (for whom I volunteer), the first talk featured Aaron Draplin a few months ago. Sidenote, The Friends have a big book sale fundraiser happening this weekend - further reading.

The gents from Rough Water Films put together a glimpse at the short lecture and ensuing afternoon tea-social; featuring Kick*ss Cupcakes, deer-sausage rolls [yes! -ed] and pumpkin pie ice cream. Not messing around... Must add huge thanks to my sis for being KP.

10E1985: DDC at the SPL

 

Aaron "Field Notes" Draplin was at the Somerville Library to tell “Tall Tales” on Thursday night. This talk (sponsored by The Barbarian Group) had been in the works for a few months and huge thanks to Draplin for making it happen. An enlightening and inspiring 90 minutes; pretty fantastic honestly. You might know about this nugget pictured above (how he was involved in creating the Highway Recovery Act and TIGER/DOT logos. Over one weekend...) but the last story was a pretty heavy emotional punch. I got choked up even retelling it to Mrs. 10E later. Massive respect to Aaron for the tone of the whole evening.

This was a total thrill for me, not gonna lie -and the crowd was into it. Social afterwards at Five Horses (thx guys, and Inspired Bev.) was great too #rum_punch. Major chats about seed hats; past and current manufacturers (all tiny). More to come...
