us open -snowboarding championships

Every March, hell it seems to come quicker each year, is the US Open Snowboarding Championships held at Stratton Mountain, Vermont. Organized by Burton Snowboards and fueled by a perfect storm of history, end of season good weather (often) and a huge dose of Vermont flavor. Many of the Burton riders over the years have been Vermonters of course, (Ross Powers, Kelly Clark, Abe and Hannah Teter, then going back to Stevie and Mike Hayes and Andy Coughlin) as is Burton's founder Jake Burton Carpenter. No space here for a history of snowboarding but there will be multiple posts in the days ahead leading up the The Open. Yearning for the old Opens is getting a little worn, but the event started with pure racing and is now 100% style judged, so the old timers have a right to gripe. Regardless, the Saturday halfpipe contest is legendary.

Couple of moody clips below. A K3 shooting 16mm incase you wondered.

pete seeger

M gave me a 3 disc Johnny Cash Show chock full of great performances, a huge range of guests, including some nice back and forth with Pete Seeger here. Was reminded today that Seeger was also part of the worldwide transferal of the song We Shall Overcome... great documentary on its transformation from spiritual to civil liberties rallying-call here.

Been on a bit of a Seeger kick the last year. Play. Was perfect timing for the inauguration...

this land is your land

Going back to Sunday's Inauguration Concert. Genius idea to have Pete Seeger on at the end. (There is a recent American Masters series on him that I need to see.) Don't have cable so missed the HBO aired concert, but was alerted by a tweet (right?) on twitter. Anyway, Pete included all the lesser heard verses... Goosebumps time.

A great high wall there, tried to stop me
A great big sign there, private property
On the other side it didn't say nothing
That side was made for you and me.

This is original, shot content btw incase there was any doubt, though music is the undervalued Pete Seeger: Coal Creek Marsh.
