10E2288: 2014 USA Snowboard Uniform - by Burton

For the upcoming 2014 Olympics in Sochi, the USA snowboard team is again kitted out by Burton (the 2000 uniform here). The uniform jacket as above was inspired by an old quilt and flag bought at Brimfield market - then resewn by a contact in Vermont. The pants are a "corduroy". There is also a puffy version of the jacket based on Burton's Wanderer block [probably -ed.] with the same quilt-print for off-hill. V tasty.

The kit does not look especially technical for sure - but infact boasts a U.S. Army R&D'd Vaporshell laminate on top (the patchwork quilt-look is a sublimated print) and Burton's own Nanoshell for the cord snowpants. Sharp customers might project a dose of RRL in here and would not be surprised (esp w/ the Brimfield scouting trip added) if someone/somewhere migrated from Ralph Lauren. I don't know the answer myself. Like it or not they weren't lazy about it.

To quote the great philosopher Thomas Callhan Jr., "holy schnikes". Burton snowboards partnered with Filson to create the Squire above. Virgin Mackinaw Wool paired with oil-finished Shelter Cloth. On the inside a combo of satin/fleece lining and 3M™ Thinsulate™ Platinum Insulation. Fulltime hood with Sherpa fleece. Also the Sentry below; in full oilcloth. Both north of $300 but wouldn't kick out of bed for eating crackers... Burton's 2013 line trickling in.

I have mentioned the Washed Up Cup a few times on 10engines before [a GS race for former and non-pro snowboarders, held during the US Open Snowbard Champs' at Stratton, VT -ed.] but just grabbed co-founder Seth Neary for a quick interview and wanted to hear the thinking behind it, in his words.

Seth: Basically, the Washed Up Cup is a reunion of past competitors of the US Open. We're all Washed Up and we know it. We love it. This will be the 4th annual.

10engines: Respect that this is a timed event and revel in the retro-ness of it, but beyond that also seems like a chance to celebrate some of the "personalities" from USOpen's past?

Seth:Yeah, it's really an excuse to get together to celebrate and relive old glory days. The GS was the easiest thing to organize - A lot the competitors are actually half-pipe riders from the 90's. We're hoping a lot of old pros show up. We'd love to resurrect the original pipe in the original spot and have Lyle cut it with the backhoe. We can only dream.

10engines: You are the Friday night show now? How did this get added to the Open schedule?

Seth: Burton contacted me and Steve Hayes and proposed the idea of including the WUC in the 30th annual US Open. We thought it was a great idea - We all miss competing at the Open and started this little reunion event during the Open so we could some how feel a part of it again. We have our event on Suntanner on Friday - that way we could go over to Sun Bowl on Saturday and watch the main event. The last 3 years have been really fun and a great time for people to catch up and race.

10engines: There is kind of a twist this year, a jump on the course... As soon as I heard "jumps included" all I could think of was this shot below of Jeff Brushie breaking out in the middle of a run (1992).

Seth: A lot of the competitors were half-pipe riders back in the day; Jason Evans, Seth Miller, Eric Rehbein, Jason Goldsmith, Jay Rehbein, Lukas Huffman, Jesse Huffman, myself... We were talking about changing it up a little bit this time and not be so structured. Basically we want to throw Methods for the crowd (if we still can). The jump will be after the timed finish line and is optional. That part will be judged and time will be deducted from your overall time based on how rad you get.

10engines: Over the past few years some guys on older equipment did quite well I believe... what is your take on that? They just know how to ride or "short boards suck, long boards truck" as Coughlin would say? Haha.

Seth: In the past 3 years some older boards have been dusted off and waxed up. Kevin McMan road an original Burton Cruiser and did really well. I think he got 3rd.

Basically, If you competed in the Open before 2006 and consider yourself retired or Washed UP you're welcome to compete. If you're Ross Powers and just won a Method contest at the Xgames last year or you're Terje and competed in the 1992 US Open but just won the 2012 Baker Bank Slalom... you can forerun, lol.

The Burton US Open Snowboarding Championships are a respected contest yes, but are often unabashadly about good times, Vermont pride and connecting with friends. I know I'll see people here then not again till next March, whether that is in the registration office, on the side of the halfpipe or in the beer garden.

For the last 3 years a sanctioned (but let's face it slightly cheeky rogue event, wrote about it here) has been happening on the Friday before the halfpipe finals; The Washed Up Cup. Some of the older men and women (by which I mean over 21) take to a gated course and race the clock. Timed events have been absent from The Open since the last boardercross race occurred in 2001, and it is has been great to see organizers Seth Neary and Steve Hayes bring one back.

Long/short, this year The US Open have partnered with The Washed Up Cup and will present it under the loights on Friday noight. Get your clear lenses ready... As usual prize money equal for men and women. Full details below via opensnowboarding.

A Slingshot event: A gated and timed event that ties in freestyle elements with a gated GS style course.

• 45-60 second race course
• No hard boots allowed/No alpine race equipment [woolen pants optional -ed.]
• 2 runs combined. Fastest combined runs wins
• You must have competed in the US Open or previous Washed Up Cup
• Can't have competed in a pro event in last 6 years
• Riders will be given a time deduction based on the execution score on the freestyle elements.
• Freestyle elements are optional

The winter sports industry is in Denver for their annual tradeshow (SIA 2012) and there are leaked shots and publicity shots all over if you look. If the last post didn't make you feel old then this will. The US Open Snowboarding Championships turns 30 this year... coming March 4th-11th, held as usual at Stratton Mt, VT. If they are going to run with this retro red/blue theme and the Burton anoraks etc I'll be made up. Sweet. Looks like they have tweaked the event line-up again, this time no Friday night event (instead Saturday night Rail Jam), and Sunday reserved for the Junior Jam. Racing isn't coming back anytime soon looks like... maybe on the Friday afternoon? #suntanner

ox snowboard boot from burton

The Ox Boot, from Burton. Some might call this vintage styling... for *ahem* others these boots look very familiar... like their first pair but now with everything you need and nothing you don't. The copy reads "good old days without the duct tape." These are mid-range for Burton (sub $300).

burton -cord 'pointer' pants

Must have been done before but I can't remember. Corduroy snowboard pants from Burton, w/ DRYRIDE 2L waterproof/breathability, venting options, and a quick-drying mesh lining in a slim Mid Fit (or slimmer Slim Fit). Another option for that whole hill to the street idea. Look much nicer than the slightly slick/shiny denim version.

burton x carhartt II

Burton has again teamed up with Carhartt and added a ton of tech to this traditional coat shape. Link. They did a set of pants this time too, both in brown or black "oxford" meaning treated twill I believe. Channeling the chainsaw brigade. #highbacks_and_gunracks Priced at $329 and $229. These are part of a larger Twin Peaks Collection ("A look built around rugged workwear, utility styling and a nod to Vermont roots.") that seems to have replaced the Heritage collection of last year. Good stuff. Just need woodchopper gloves in there and I can really geek out. #lifty Found via Complex.

anon -"vintage jake"

Retro-tastic new goggles, loaded with tech. 92mm tall frame and a spherical stamped lens with scratch resistant Solar Shield Technology™. $89 from Anon.

There is no doubt that the larger, spherical lenses and bigger frames are, if not here to stay, at least big this year. I bounced this off Dan Stanilonis at the newly formed ActionSportOptics and these were his thoughts;

"The goggle industry is for sure moving in that bigger frame direction, you'll see more of it moving forward is my guess. It really opens up the field of vision. I think the problem is going to be with helmet compatibility right now. Although as things progress, the goggles and helmets will be designed together to solve any problems; some already are, but more so going forward.

I am really loving the new bigger goggle frames. I think Dragon nailed it with the APX. I also like the Anon Comrade [cool rust/metal paint job too -ed.] And Spy is using Carl Zeiss lenses (on the Platton model), which are great quality."

burton.com -now THAT is a search window

Burton Snowboard's 2011/2012 site went live the other day, and is simpler visually than in years past (come back duct tape graphics!) -but check out the new search feature. Using some kind of instant search coupled with a predictive text feature, it also boasts a massive search bar once you initiate search. Well played. My gripe with a lot of library websites is that it is often hard to find the search/catalogue option, this would be an great overlay.

Going on looks only here... Have a peak at some picks/pics for winter 2011/2012 gear from Burton. What happened to the Red Wing (unofficial, leather sourced only, not co-branded) model boots?? A little bird tells me Red Wing was infact the source for the leather of some of the very first Burton boots... #historylesson #goodtimes #blogfather Update, those RedWing boots just came out.

that us open beer garden look -repeat

The months just click by, and when March hits in southern Vermont you will inevitably hear the words "is the sap running yet?" quickly followed by "is it The Open already?" This is referring to the USOpen Snowboarding Championships held at Stratton; this year sort of a week early... Right now. But hey, at least you can watch Tricia Byrnes give a live webcast.

Won't knock you over the head with it but this is a longstanding event that positions itself as a sort of good-time/season-end/local-vibe affair and it pretty much is.

Being 3 hours from the nearest major airport it must be a bit of trek/pilgrimage for a lot of the pros and bros, though maybe that adds to the mystique. Of course as The Open gets bigger each year people grumble it is not like the old days, some truth in that. (e.g. there are no timed/racing events anymore; no slalom, no GS, no boardercross. I hear there might be a race for the old boys on Friday though.)

I posted a similar blurb 2 years ago -saying that the one place you are guaranteed to meet up with your buddies (or the guys and girls you only see this one time a year) is the beer garden after the pipe finals... So see you there.

For S&G, including an old 10e look below. Not a huge hell of a difference, and that is sort of the point. So what have I learned in 3 years of blogging? PostO'alls are a huge find, crepe soled boots still rule (though admittedly maybe not the best traction in snow), and a good old hat and snowglare shades still go a long way... Grungy prepster out.

The Open as it is called in snowboarding circles [or Southern VT -ed.] is like a homecoming/class reunion and mardi gras St. Patricks-day-under-a-full-moon rolled into one, with some epic crowds and 'pipe riding happening in spring conditions. Well used to be. Some of us getting a little grey in the muzzle for the beercage part... but still a good excuse to smell the glove and take some runs with old friends.

If you want to take it down a notch, head over to Suntanner on Friday to catch the Washed Up Cup... old pros and bros and running gates. 3rd annual. The shirt above is the earliest Open memorabilia I have, would love to see others'?? 1987 results here. Craig Kelly won the slalom. There are zero timed events at The Open now...

that liftline look

H2T blacked-out is either default, boring or badass... depends on the person I guess. But if you need something more technical than wool pants and a plaid shirt then the johnny cash look is an easy fall back for ladies or gents.


Really just an excuse to include this classic board graphic though; Ross Powers' 158 Burton (2000) by Scott Lenhardt. Vermonter Lenhardt infact did all Powers' pro-models but this interpration of the Vermont flag pastoral scene is just pure and simple genius (Powers' home state is VT for those just joining, grew up riding @BromleyMountain).
