The Commander was asked after a 1968 lecture at Harvard Business School:

“Does Schweppes Tonic Water really contain quinine, and could you drink it as a cure for malaria?”

Commander Whitehead answered without pause, “Indeed, Schweppes Tonic Water does contain quinine and one could drink it as a palliative for malaria. However, should one adopt such a course of treatment one would surely expire from renal collapse, for the daily dosage, I regret, would be approximately 30 cases.”

bookshelf -in the heart of the sea

This is going on the list... Getting the impression that In the Heart of The Sea is a rigourously researched and detailed account of whaling in the 19thC. It elaborates and continues the true story that inspired and ends in Moby Dick. I think I knew, but perhaps not explicitly, that Moby Dick was a reimmaging of an actual event -the loss of the whaleship Essex. -Further reading. In the Heart of the Sea makes no bones about its sources [ouch -ed.]

drink responsibly

If a busy bartender; who has worked in Boston's Combat Zone and now long nights at Redbones, can spare 15 seconds to snip up the 6pack handles then I can too. Really, it takes 15 seconds. Cut all the retaining loops. Won't minimize landfill (actually can you recycle these?) but makes sense to do... Sidenote; recently saw another excellent doc from Vice on plastic garbage in the ocean. Garbage Island.
