breaking away

Nothing new here, just a note to the young; Breaking Away is an absolute must see. The trailer makes it look like a Michael Cera rom-com, but it speaks to town vs. gown and economic issues too. I don't remember road biking being a huge (tv) sport in the 70's, but we (road) biked everywhere as kids and this movie was huge for us. Plus there was a local quarry we'd swim in, so we thought... you know, they were reading our mail so to speak. Daniel Stern is awesome in this... like a younger version of his Shrevie in Diner.

The story arc ends at the Little 500, an intramural collegiate cycling event held at Indiana University. It is still held anually. Anyone been?? Looks pretty fun.

The Hold Steady's "One for the Cutters" brought this back nicely on their last album. Yup.

Amazing film that captures the true spirit and beauty of Bloomington, IN and the Little 500. Rode the race twice for a team called CinZano and relive those moments often as I'm riding in the rain here in Portland. If you ever have the chance, GO by all means to witness the race on a sunny April weekend.

In Bloomington recently for a wedding, as the night waned, we waxed poetic on Breaking Away and the race that's its subject. It's such a great tradition and one to which every American should bear witness. My alma mater, down the road from IU, had a similar race -- we called ours Little 5, copyrights being what they are. I've long forgotten my team name, but we had regal purple jerseys with yellow embroidery. We were clowns.
