carhartt -new line of gloves

Looks like Carhartt are about to revamp their glove line. I'm heisitant to say I have a thing for workgloves incase you get the wong idea... but they are another industry to look at in the decline of domestic production and this is maybe the 18th time they've been mentioned on 10e... There used to be whole towns devoted to glove manufacture (hello Gloversville and Johnstown) but now just a few of the older manufactures left (notably North Star and Brookville).

Regarding these new Carhartt gloves, can't find a whisper online about them except this indepth video but not 100% about who is actually manufacturing them or where. They introduce Gore-Tex, kevlar, fleece insulation and knuckle guards all over the place, a cableknit pair for women and a new technology dubbed C-Grip (an advanced dipped-type glove that will be harder wearing and grippier than Nitrile). The C-Grips could maybe double as pipe gloves... or someone can jump and do a joint project with this material... Drop MFG???

Personally I look for gloves with tough enough palms for carrying wood and insulated for winter but you can still drive in them. Not overly bulky either. So far I haven't found anything that beats Kinco's lifties.

the good life

I never saw the original moment of reckoning, here it is...
On his 40th birthday, Tom Good [Richard Briers] is no longer able to take his job seriously and gives up work as a draughtsman for a company that makes plastic toys for breakfast cereal packets.

Their house is paid for so he and his wife Barbara [Felicty Kendall] adopt a sustainable, simple and self-sufficient lifestyle while staying in their home in The Avenue, Surbiton. They turn their front and back gardens into allotments [gardens -ed.]... They introduce chickens, pigs, a goat and a cockerel. They generate their own electricity, using methane from animal waste, and attempt to make their own clothes. They sell or barter surplus crops for essentials they cannot make themselves. They cut their monetary requirements to the minimum with varying success. Their actions horrify their kindly but conventional neighbours, Margo [played by Penelope Keith, who is great] and Jerry Leadbetter [Peter Bowles was originally to play the role of Jerry but was unavailable. He later starred opposite Penelope Keith in To the Manor Born. Paul Eddington played Jerry, then went onto Yes, Minister.] via wikipedia

This 1970's BBC series The Good Life (renamed Good Neighbours in the USA) never mentions Scott and Helen Nearing (and their "Good Life" writings) but related premise. The Barbara character played by Felicity Kendall crept into many British minds as an unconventional sex symbol / tasty-tomboy type figure. Looking at these now as even a marital relation study of the 2 couples it is pretty fantastic, though all the self-sufficiency stuff pretty tame. Someone has jammed the whole thing up on youtube... The definition of light comedy.

olivia pedroli

Long/short; Olivia Pedroli is a Swiss singer w/ more than a little classical music background, plus interests in folk/jazz/experimental music. Song above off her latest album The Den, which was created over almost a year of collaboration with Valgeir Sigurðsson, the Icelandic producer and founder of the Bedroom Community record label, well-known for his collaborations with Björk, Camille, CocoRosie, Bonnie Prince Billy, Kronos Quartet, etc. That recording studio looks smart.

Just digging through her stuff, you can hear tons of her current and backcatalog online at Olivia Pedroli. And yeah she rocks the hell out of crunchy knits...

the smiths -unreleased demos & instrumentals (double lp in blue vinyl)

TurntableLab still has some copies of this recent release...
This blue, double-vinyl release contains some of the most sought after Smiths demos (some might be alternate master versions) and instrumentals, including an extended version of "The Queen Is Dead(1)"; "Frankly, Mr. Shankly(2)" with horns; "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out(3)" with the final refrain "there is a light in your eyes and it never goes out"; and "Death Of A Disco Dance(4)" with the improvised whistled solo as noted in Simon Goddard book. The two instrumentals are "I Misses You(5)" and "Heavy Track(6)".
TTL has previews of all the trackls, so fire on over. Audiophiles won't apppreciate the compressed/clipped mono but fans have been chomping for this...

1) Have haunted the TTL site for a few years and they have great stuff. Their homegrown compilation cds are killer too. 2) This post prompted by Selectism's find of a The Smiths Rough Trade restoration/recreation -further reading @ SmithsRecycle. SmithsRecycle also reviewed the Unreleased Demos double lp.
