Just found Brian Floca's Lightship, perfect for boat (lighthouse, submarine, squid, Titanic, octopus, tugboat, iceberg, storm...) obsessed kids.
The author/illustrator recreates a slice of history with this informative description of the time and (imaginary)crew of the Ambrose, a now retired lightship (all lightships now retired, since 1980-odd I believe.)

The drawings in Lightship are based largely on LV-87, also known as the Ambrose lightship, currently docked at the South Street Seaport Museum in New York City. -via BrianFloca
