This Sunday, in Glasgow (Scotland) The Harris Tweed Ride will head off for a spin round the smiling city with an amazing list of stopping off points;
  • Gramaphone records and vintage tea pots get the riders jazzed at the starting line tea party courtesy of CC&T, porridge w/ honey and whisky cocktails
  • Nibbles at Browns Glasgow (HQ of 10engines sister @apothercaryfox)
  • Black pudding baps [baps are bread rolls. i would sign up for this alone -ed.]
  • Ice cream from Stravaign

Not sure how any actual bicycling will get done haha. Post-post-ride party at the legendary Sub Club after. #radiorental. They have to do this again...

Still stuck on what to wear? The HTR folks have dreamed up a few kits for ladies and gents, reproducing below.

poler -caps for sale

Poler pretty much puts on a clinic on how to mix lifestyle shots with lightbox retail. Awesome. The camping/lifestyle brand just released their soft goods; highlighting the caps here. Tried and true, camo and blaze. The scrambled egg kills me -love a good rope font "patch" design.

duck head -don't call it a comeback

Been on the lookout for Duck Head to relaunch over the past few years, and looks like it has actually happened. The Trad posted something today, check it here.

Duck Head has a southern heritage, but the Vermont Country Store in Weston, VT used to stock them in the 80's. I have a perfect-storm photo somewhere of me in a Duck Head tshirt sitting on the bumper of a Subaru, in Maine. Circa 1985. Think Pops liked them cause they were cheap *cough* mid-priced and also the name was similar to his favourite insult... #FH.

Their site has a "history of" video and you can geek out on the beginnings of duck cloth, their role in providing army uniforms in WWII, their sponsorship of Hank Williams and so on.

Since you asked, no these pants are not made domestically. A contact there expressed some reservation that $80 khakis might not sell, but the window may be open to developing a Made In The USA category. Sub-$50 khakis are still my unicorn, but since these guys almost invented the market segment I bet they could sell $80 w/o too much trouble...

I hope they revert to keeping things plain and simple and good rather than a offering a million items, but in the meantime, use DWH186520 for a 20% discount right now.

friends of the somerville library -benefit at sacco/flatbread tomorrow (aug 2)

Attention fellow 'Villens and pizza-lovers. The Friends of the Somerville Library invite you to attend our Somerville Public Library Benefit at Flatbread Pizza. Eat some incredible pizza and support the library. I'll be there doing the chat etc.

WHEN: Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011 from 5-11:30pm

WHERE: 45 Day St., Somerville, MA @ Sacco's Bowl Haven (Davis Square)

WHY: Every pizza purchased helps the Friends of the Somerville Public Library support educational programs for children and adults at the library, including the museum pass program. The Flatbread Company donates $3.50 for every large pizza and $1.75 for every small pizza sold.

WHY ELSE: Support library advocacy efforts.

WHY ELSE: Fit in some last summer reading, and check out the great used books that we'll be selling for $1.00 each. Buck a book.

ONE MORE REASON: Insanely good organicy pizza and candlepin bowling.

paging cap'n nemo

Too much? These porthole style mirrors would be perfect for a kid's room. A kid who was obsessesed with 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea maybe, and the Titanic... Adults might tread a little more carefully, easpecially if they already have lobster bouy house numbers dangling outside... or maybe that would make them even better.

Lots of price ranges and finishes out there. These via amazon, in the $40 range.

the electric horseman

The Electric Horseman was the 5th time Sydney Pollack had directed Robert Redford, who along with Jane Fonda was by 1978 a bona fide superstar. There are populist themes here (evil corporations, nasty journalists) and a little action from Redford as the broken-down rodeo star [can we call this a subgenre of westerns right now -ed?], but it is the simple, rock solid performances that carry this one.

Also notable is the first acting appearance of Willie Nelson who supplies stonecold tunes to the soundtrack (My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys, Midnight Rider, Hands on the Wheel, Mama Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys). Great way to spend 2 hours...

Stainless steel percolator ftw.

Redford's own Rolex Sub' w/ Navajo band attached.

Wilford Brimley plays a good samaritan farmer/trucker. Recognize him right?
He becomes Pop Fisher a few years later to Redford's Roy Hobbs in The Natural.
Sidenote: Penfield... can you remake this jacket please??

Wrong canyon, goons... Nice Pendelton though.
