Winner of the 72hr. Filmmaker Showdown at World Ski and Snowboard Festival in Whistler (WSSF). Answering the age old question "where do those bra trees come from?" is Panty Bloom; by Joe Gaetani, Alex Adria and Chris Zimmerman. The filmmaker voiceover narrative kills it -they added it last second as the weather crapped out some of their shoot and they almost got stuck in the hotel's elevator... so thought "what if we film the whole thing here?" Mother meet invention. Roll credits, we're done.

top shelf flea

In case you were not following along, The Top Shelf Flea is just over a week away. Props to Somervillen, An Affordable Wardrobe for organizing this upcoming event... won't be a pop-up-flea-north but that is sort of the point I suspect.

It will be a gathering of local merchants of high quality vintage, re-styled, and otherwise second hand stuff: clothing for both men and women, books, housewares, furniture, [records? -ed] and whatever else...

You start wearing western shirts in subtle blues; chambray, maybe a denim. Pretty soon it's full-blown ginghams with contrasting cuffs and yolk. Gets to be a problem... Above from Levi's Europe. Just this side of rodeo clown. I have a few others that go over the line... The red tag almost disappears here, like that.

carrie wicks -i'll get around to it

Carrie's album I'll Get Around To It is available to buy starting today; via OA2 Records. Killing me w/ that title... fantastic. My sis-in-law Carrie Wicks has been working on this for over a year, whilst jazz-singing around Seattle, WA for almost a decade. Carrie's MySpace has some clips to preview.

Even cooler, she is having a cd release party at Egans in Ballard on Saturday May 1, at 9pm; accompanied by Bill Anschell (piano), Jeff Johnson (bass) and Byron Vannoy (drums). $12 gets you into this and the 11pm show when she mixes it up with the jazz-vocal group Venus d'Bop.

Little sartorial info; though Carrie is a queen of thrift (and knows my secret Vermont thrifty attic shopping spot) the coat in the album cover is actually her grandmother's. Take THAT wikipedia...

get low

A southern gothic tale styled to all hell. Robert Duvall goes grumpy old man x10. Can't wait. Offical site at Get Low.

At heart a tale of forgiveness and redemption, "Get Low" manages the difficult feat of being at once understated and vigorous in its confident storytelling. The dialogue is peppered with choice bits of droll humor, and Murray --smooth and subtle in a showcase role -- lays claim to many of them. Indeed, the pic is most appealing during scenes in which Murray's deadpan wit plays off Duvall's dour irascibility, and both actors effortlessly bring out the best in each other...

Duvall's more emotionally charged scenes with Spacek and Cobbs are low-key yet powerful, and Schneider wisely refrains from overemphasizing the obvious with intrusive music or flashy technique. Straightforward simplicity is the defining trait of the pic as a whole, reflected in the evocative bluegrass-flavored score by Jan A.P. Kaczmarek and the lovely widescreen lensing of David Boyd. "Get Low" obviously is a labor of love for all involved, but it never resorts to undue yanking on heartstrings. -via Variety
