Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs was written by Judi Barrett and illustrated by Ron Barrett (husband and wife team at the time I believe), released in 1982. The boy loves this ridiculous, absurd, messy idea of thrice daily weather for breakfast lunch and dinner... 
But when pancakes start to cover the buildings, and spaghetti snarls the traffic, it is time to escape (on stale bread and peanut butter boats... hey a shark is eating that sandwich boat the boy yells).
They are making a claymation/3D movie of this for September 2009 release I understand. Voice talent includes Bruce Campbell and Mr. T...
